This year the council has entered Deal into the South & South East in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions.

The days the judges will be visiting Deal are;

South & South East in Bloom:  10 July
Britain in Bloom:  9 August

Let’s hope Deal blooms all over again as our town tries to gain a Gold Award.

Last year the town was awarded Gold in SSEIB and the Britain in Bloom Final was awarded Silver Gilt. It’s a great honour out of 1,600 UK entries - and Deal is in it again this year!

The competition isn’t just about flowers, it also covers green spaces, shrubs, biodiversity in the area such as wildlife, birds, wild flowers, butterflies, bees and other insects, seals and sea life. Lack of litter, a clean beach, no graffiti, cleanliness of the town, lack of weeds and lack of dog mess etc. is all taken into consideration.

The judges also look at the community as a whole: schools and all of the community groups that make our town special. Floral shop window displays, hanging baskets and window boxes. Businesses and DTC and DDC displays.

It takes a lot of co-ordination to win an award. Every single piece of help from the general public makes a big difference; from just picking up a piece of litter when you’re shopping to joining one of the local groups who have volunteers involved in projects like Sandown Castle and The Landmark Garden and Deal With It as we all network together on this.

Bloom competitions bring people into the town to come to see the floral displays; this in turn brings in revenue and is very important to our small businesses. If you would like to help our town in 2018 please do become involved.
