Temporary Traffic Restrictions – The 149th Open - Sandwich – 11-18 July 2021

To facilitate the holding of The 149th Open (Golf Championship) at Royal St George's, Sandwich, it will be necessary to impose traffic restrictions on roads in Sandwich, Deal and surrounding areas, to ensure smooth traffic flows and minimise congestion.

Thousands of spectators are expected to attend the championship throughout the week.

A multi-agency traffic plan will be in place during the event to enable the large volumes of visitors to get to and from the Golf course, whilst accommodating the needs of residents and businesses.

The restrictions are briefly outlined below, followed by more detailed summaries. Full details are in the attached Public Notices and accompanying map (also Map-b.pdf (dover.gov.uk)

  • FOOTPATH CLOSURES – the footpaths which fall within the boundary of Royal St George’s Golf Links will be fully closed throughout the event, with a signposted diversion.
  • ROAD CLOSURES – various roads will need to be closed, with access maintained for Permit Holders where applicable
  • ONE-WAY RESTRICTIONS – certain roads will become one-way only, and in some instances, the direction of travel will be reversed during the day, so that traffic is routed towards the event in the morning and away from the event in the afternoons, known as ‘Tidal Flow’.
  • PARKING RESTRICTIONS – parking will be prohibited between 6.00 am and 10.00 pm each day on various roads in Sandwich, Deal, Cliffsend and surrounding villages
  • SPEED LIMITS – for safety reasons, speed limits will need to be imposed on approach roads to the venue and car parks, as shown on site

FOOTPATH CLOSURES

All use of following footpaths will be prohibited to the extent shown on site.

  • Public Footpath EE231 - (part of the Saxon Shore Way) between Princes Drive and North Stream.
  • Public Footpath EE248 between Tollgate Cottages and where it meets Public Footpath EE249
  • Public Footpath EE249 between Princes Drive and Guilford Road.

An alternative route will be signposted on site using Public Footpath EE230 between Princes Drive and North Stream.

ROAD CLOSURES

The roads below will be closed, with access maintained for Permit Holders where applicable.

GOLF ROAD, DEAL – between Ethelbert Road and Guilford Road

ANCIENT HIGHWAY, SANDWICH BAY

DELFSIDE, SANDWICH

GUILFORD ROAD, SANDWICH BAY

KNIGHTRIDER STREET – between The Quay and Upper Strand Street – 6.00 am to 2.00 pm only

RAMSGATE ROAD, SANDWICH – between the junctions with The Quay and Willowbank

SANDOWN ROAD, SANDWICH - between the junctions with St George’s Road and Guilford Road

PIKE ROAD, EASTRY – at the junction with Venson Road

CANTERBURY ROAD WEST, CLIFFSEND – from Cliffsend Roundabout eastwards to the western boundary of number 54

ONE-WAY RESTRICTIONS

The following roads will become one-way only, and on some of them, the direction of travel will be reversed during the day, so that traffic is routed towards the event in the morning and away from the event in the afternoons, known as ‘Tidal Flow’.

UPPER STRAND STREET, SANDWICH – one-way only between the junctions with High Street and Knightrider Street

  • 6.00 am to 2.00 pm - eastbound only
  • 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm - westbound only

KNIGHTRIDER STREET, SANDWICH

  • 6.00 am to 2.00 pm – southbound only, from the junction with Upper Strand Street to the junction with Sandown Road
  • 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm – northbound only from the junction with Sandown Road to The Quay

SANDOWN ROAD, SANDWICH – will become one-way only between the junctions with Knightrider Street and St George’s Road

  • 6.00 am to 2.00 pm - eastbound only
  • 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm - westbound only

GALLIARD STREET – traffic will be prohibited from turning left from Galliard Street into New Street between 6.00 am and 10.00 pm, except buses and HGVs

ETHELBERT ROAD, DEAL – one-way eastbound only between the junctions with Golf Road and Canute Road at all times

PIKE ROAD, TILMANSTONE – will become one-way southbound only from 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm, from Thornton Road to the entrance of Ovenden Recycling Centre

VENSON ROAD, TILMANSTONE – one-way westbound from 50 metres from A256 Whitfield Bypass to the southern junction with Pike Road / Thornton Road at all times

SPEED LIMITS

Speed limits will be imposed on the following roads, as fully detailed in the accompanying Public Notice

  • A256 Whitfield Bypass / Sandwich Road & Sandwich Bypass
  • A258 Deal Road
  • A299 Hengist Way
  • Barville Road, Waldershare / Eastry
  • Deal Road, Sandwich
  • Dover Road, Eastry

PARKING RESTRICTIONS

Parking will be prohibited between 6.00 am and 10.00 pm each day on various roads in Sandwich, Deal, Cliffsend and surrounding villages

SANDWICH

ANCIENT HIGHWAY, SANDWICH BAY – for its entire length

ASH ROAD – for its entire length

DEAL ROAD / DOVER ROAD – from the junction with A258 Deal Road to where it becomes New Street

KNIGHTRIDER STREET – between the junctions with The Quay and Sandown Road

MONKS WAY – for its entire length

NEW STREET – between the junctions with Dover Road and Galliard Street with the exception of buses

THE QUAY – for its entire length, with the exception of the existing limited waiting bays

RAMSGATE ROAD – between the junctions with A256 Sandwich Bypass and The Quay

SANDOWN ROAD – between the junctions with St George’s Road and Knightrider Street

STRAND STREET – for its entire length, but certain exceptions

UPPER STRAND STREET – for its entire length

DEAL

ETHELBERT ROAD – between the junctions with Golf Road and Canute Road

GODWYN ROAD

Northern side – between the junctions with The Marina and Sandown Road

Southern side – for its entire length

GOLF ROAD – northwards from the junction with Godwyn Road to its northernmost point

GUILFORD ROAD – for its entire length

THE MARINA

Eastern Side – between the junctions with Godwyn Road and Albion Road

Western Side – between the junctions with Godwyn Road and Harold Road

RURAL

BARVILLE ROAD, WALDERSHARE / EYTHORNE – between A256 Whitfield Bypass and the junction with Pike Road, between 2.00 pm and 10.00 pm

DOVER ROAD, EASTRY – between A256 Whitfield /Eastry Bypass and junction with Pike Road

PIKE ROAD, TILMANSTONE / EYTHORNE – between the junctions with Venson Road and Barville Road, between 2.00 pm and 10.00 pm

VENSON ROAD, TILMANSTONE - between A256 Whitfield Bypass and the western junction with Pike Road, between 2.00 pm and 10.00 pm

CANTERBURY ROAD WEST, CLIFFSEND, RAMSGATE – between A299 Cliffsend Roundabout and the western boundary of number 54.

CLEARWAYS – on the following roads, Waiting and Stopping will be prohibited at all times for any reason except in an emergency.

GUILFORD ROAD, SANDWICH – from Sandown Road to the Toll House south of Tollgate Cottages

SANDOWN ROAD, SANDWICH – between the junctions with St George’s Road and Guilford Road including existing parking bays, but excluding the disabled bay.

ST GEORGE’S ROAD, SANDWICH – for its entire length

The restrictions are for the safety of the public by avoiding congestion and ensuring smooth traffic flows during The 149th Open (Golf Championship).
