Get cooking with Deal Home Kitchen

Published: 01 March 2024

Preparations are now underway for the Town Council's Deal Home Kitchen initiative, celebrating great green culinary expertise.

We’re asking local restaurants, cafes, caterers and pubs to share a tasty veggie or vegan recipe we can all cook at home.

Swapping out meat or dairy once a week has a positive impact on climate change and our Deal Home Kitchen webpage will provide people with tasty alternative recipes that celebrates and is supported by local businesses.

Deal Town Council will collect the recipes and share them online across the Great Big Green Week in June and host the complete menu on the website too.

The theme for the Great Big Green Week this year is ‘let’s swap together for good’, asking people to make every day swaps to help create a better tomorrow.

Going meat free for one day a week for a year sees more than 430 miles of greenhouse gases avoided through animal agriculture, saving the equivalent amount of greenhouse gases as driving from London to Edinburgh*

Mayor of Deal, Cllr Oliver Richardson, said: “We all understand the issues surrounding climate change and it can feel a bit overwhelming about knowing what to do.

“However, with a small but tasty change to your diet, even once a week, you can make a real impact.

“We at home try to cook two vegetarian meals a week and we’ve got such a rich food scene in Deal, I am really looking forward to seeing the recipes our fabulous cafes and restaurants share.”

We will endeavor to contact Deal restaurants, cafes, caterers and pubs asking them to submit a recipe for Deal Home Kitchen. If you are a Deal restaurant, cafe, caterer or pub and have a recipe ready to go, please do send it in to deal.town.council@deal.gov.uk.

The deadline for submissions will be Friday 3 May 2024 and if you have any questions, please contact our Climate Change Officer, Nadine Miller, on 07388 059833.
