Deal Town Council's response to the Environment Agency's annual report siting the water quality at at Deal Castle as poor.
Mayor of Deal, Cllr Oliver Richardson said: “The classification of ‘poor’ for our swimming waters off the coast at Deal Castle is nothing short of devastating for our town.
“So much of our lives are intertwined with the sea, it is what connects us and it forms part of who we are as a community in Deal.
“Our beaches are enjoyed by all of us and welcome the great number of tourists that support our local economy. We also have a long-established fishing trade and many take to the pier to fish throughout the year.
“The full impact on our lives and marine life is yet to be determined.
“Last month Deal Town Council agreed the creation of the Ocean and Coastal Recovery Strategy and Declaration, supporting the recovery of our coastline and sea off Deal.
“This latest report from the Environment Agency puts that work into sharp focus.”
Dover District Council’s role in bathing water quality is to inform the public of the Environment Agency’s sampling results via
their website and in the event of a poor bathing water classification or a pollution incident to notify the public of the Environment Agency’s advice.
