'Bin It!' anti-litter message wins stencil design competition

In the autumn Deal Town Council launched a new
anti-litter campaign, asking people to vote for one of three stencil designs that will be sprayed on pavements at litter hotspots, encouraging people to use a nearby bin.
Design A (pictured left) won with 55% of the vote and at April’s Environment Committee meeting, Chairperson Cllr Sam Brookfield and Cllr Les Craggs picked a winner from those who voted.
The winning design picker was local resident Susan Blyth (pictured right). She said: “I am impressed with the campaign in Deal to improve awareness and action of keeping Deal litter free and the chosen logo, ‘Bin It!’ is simple and understandable and the stencil style works well.
“Involving children and adults choosing a logo is a good step in the right direction to recognize and hopefully improve action so I look forward to seeing them around the town.
“And, it’s great the stencils will be on the pavement as dogs can tell their owners to use the bin too!”
The initiative was launched at Climate Action Day in November and now the winning design has been selected, the stencils will soon be appearing in town.
Mayor of Deal, Cllr Oliver Richardson said: “I’d like to thank Susan for such a great choice and also thank all those who took part to help us raise awareness to keep Deal clean.
“Being a coastal town it’s even more important that we don’t litter as it not only harms wildlife, it affects marine life too.
“We see all kinds of detritus wash up on our shores and plastic pollution continues to be a problem so this initiative, particularly now, will really help drive home the message that we want to keep our beautiful town clean.”
