"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Revd Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
Holocaust Memorial Day will be held on Monday 27 January 2025 and marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
At 11am a service will be held at the Memorial Stone in the grounds of St George’s Church and all are welcome to attend.
In the evening, a candlelight reception will be held at Deal Town Hall with guest speakers exploring the theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day, ‘ For a better future’
Kent Refugee Action Network CEO, Dr Razia Shariff, will talk about 'Changing the world one small step at a time'. The second speaker will be
Samphire Community Engagement Coordinator, Media and Advocacy Lead, Kay Marsh, sharing how we are universally bound together by our shared experiences.
Town Clerk Lorna Crow said: “Holocaust Memorial Day will give us all an opportunity for reflection, connection and conversation.
“
Light the Darkness is a national movement that happens each year for Holocaust Memorial Day and in hosting the evening by candlelight we’re sharing an intentional and symbolic message.
“We will again shine a light in the Undercroft through the night and those who join us at the Town Hall will be gifted a candle to take home so they too can shine light in the darkness.”
Light refreshments will be provided and the evening will begin at 7.30pm on Monday 27 January.
It is open to all and free to attend and guests will need to register their space in advance by completing the form below:
