Deal Town Council declares an urgent need for Ocean Recovery

Published: 14 October 2025

Deal Town Council has adopted an Ocean and Coastal Recovery strategy to improve and protect its coastline.

A formal declaration, stating an urgent need for action and increased awareness was signed by the Mayor of Deal, Cllr Mike Eddy (pictured with Deputy Mayor of Deal, Cllr Peter Findley)

He said: “The Ocean and Coastal Recovery Strategy will help guide our policy and decision making and builds on our environmental actions and ambitions.

“Our coastline supports so much of what we hold dear; our businesses, our tourism, swimming, fishing, it’s a way of life for our town, it’s part of the fabric of who we are.

“And let us not forget all the creatures that inhabit the seas, dependent on that delicate ecosystem for their continued survival.

“There has been a steady decline in the quality of Deal’s bathing water, from excellent in 2019 to the poor rating in 2024.

“The decline in sea health has brought the town together to ask questions of those responsible and this strategy equips the town council to amplify those concerns and push even further for positive change.“

The Ocean and Coastal Recovery Strategy has been produced in consultation with local stakeholders, the remit within which Deal Town Council operates and in line with the Climate Action Strategy, Environmental Policy and Declaration of Ecological Emergency.
