Holocaust Memorial Day 2026

A service will be held at the Memorial Stone at St George’s Church on Tuesday 27 January at 11am to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2026.

The theme for this year’s HMD is Bridging Generations and pupils from three primary schools have created an exhibition of thoughts and reflections which are now on display in the Undercroft at Deal Town Hall.

Hornbeam Primary School, Sandown School and Warden House Primary School have been learning about the Holocaust and what can be taken from history in shaping how we live today.

An extract from one moving poem ‘I must remember’, written by a student from Hornbeam Primary School, reads:
“I must remember tasting the fear in the air, when people wondered who was next.
“Now we must remember to speak out.
“We must remember to be heard.
“No more lost lives.
“Stop history from repeating itself.
“Use your voice to help others.”

The exhibition will be housed in the Undercroft until the end of the January.

The Holocaust Memorial Day service is open to everyone to attend and will begin at 11am at the Memorial Stone in the grounds of St George’s Church (by the boundary to St George’s Road).

The annual event is organised by Deal Town Council and Mayor of Deal, Cllr Mike Eddy, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day asks us to look back and reflect but also to learn and listen and make sure each life is valued and we are all equal in value.

“In a time in our history when we have more means at our disposal to instantly share our thoughts, voice and opinion, we again come back to that power and skill of actually listening.

“The artwork, poetry and reflections of the pupils show such empathy, intent for peace and a determination for people to be seen, heard and remembered.”
