An opportunity to get involved before the next elections - One Councillor vacancy available 

Deal Town Council is inviting applications from local residents to join the council through co-option. 

This is an opportunity to make a difference locally, represent your community, and take part in shaping the future of Deal—while gaining valuable experience in local government.

What does the role involve? 

Councillors:
• Attend evening meetings (typically monthly and bi-monthly)
• Represent the views of local residents
• Contribute to decisions on services, facilities, and community projects

The role is flexible and can be balanced alongside other commitments. Councillors are unpaid, although reasonable expenses may be reimbursed.

Who can apply? 

You must:

• Be aged 18 or over

• Be a British citizen, or an eligible Commonwealth or EU citizen 

And meet at least one of the following criteria before the date of your nomination: 

• Registered to vote in the parish
• Lived in the parish (or within 4.8 kilometres) during the whole of the past 12 months
• Worked in the parish for the whole of the past 12 months
• Occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises within the parish area during the whole of the 12 months.

Please note:

You cannot: 

• Be a paid officer of Deal Town Council

• Be holding a politically restricted post (as defined under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989)

• Be subject to a bankruptcy restriction order

• Have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 3 months or more (including a suspended sentence), without the option of a fine, during the five years prior to election day

• Have been convicted of corrupt or illegal practices by an election court

• Stand as a councillor if you have been disqualified under Section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972, Section 78A of the Local Government Act 2000 or Section 34 of the Localism Act 2011
